Colours, wind and flavours of the sea - Liguria - Northern Italy

Liguria is the land of a thousand colours, harshly hit by wind and sea, of poetry and romance, of mystery and love, rich in beauty and culture. If you like frantic life and big spaces, this is not the place to come. This is the land where fishermen still repair their nets at sunset after a hard day at sea, these are the places where illustrious travellers of the past found inspiration: Andersen, Stendhal, Byron, Shelley, Keats, Wagner... and more recently Nietzsche, Hemingway...
A whole web site wouldn't be enough to celebrate its splendour. We will let our illustrious artists talk for us, to introduce you to the magnificent show that Liguria can offer you.

"...I would like to remain here. I had rather not go any further..." Mark Twain, Innocents abroad, 1869

Moving by land and sea, we'll breathe the art, history and poetry that only these special villages mounted in the rocks can offer. The "Cinque Terre" and the Gulf of Poets... from Manarola and Portovenere to Portofino. Do you remember Frank Sinatra's song "Love in Portofino"?...
In Chiavari and Zoagli we'll see the traditional lace, silk and damasks craftsmanship, that still use techniques and original looms of past centuries, while in Camogli we'll have the best ice cream and taste the "Queen of food" (as Pablo Neruda defined it), then moving to the "Superba": Genoa is the capital of the region and the greatest historical centre in Europe, honoured by UNESCO the title of World Heritage. The coast of Liguria west of Genoa is just as beautiful. Finalborgo, Triora (the ancient village of witches), the unusual Bussana Vecchia and all the other medieval villages are there and wait to welcome you as priviledged guests. Last but not least, we'll spend a night in the delightful medieval village of Millesimo, where Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes' author, often stayed.

"There is a pleasure in the pathless wood, there is a rapture on the lonely shore, there is society where no one intrudes, by the deep sea and the music in its roar…" G.G. Byron

This is what Byron felt staying at Stella Maris, an exclusive mansion near Camogli on a remote but fairytale strip of land that plunges into the sea, only accessible by sea or by a footpath in the mountains. Here we'll have the rare chance of spending the night in "his" room (that still keeps most of its original aspect and characteristics). And in the following days we'll also stay at a real art gallery, among antiques and precious paintings (in rooms with elegant frescoes and stuccos) or in a prestigious baroque villa with its 10th century old park.

Every year in October Genoa celebrates its ancestor Niccolo Paganini, undoubtedly the greatest violin player ever. For a whole week Genoa hosts the most important violin contest, whose winner will have the honour of playing the famous "Cannon", Paganini's original violin, which is now stored at Tursi Palace. During this celebration Genoa lights up with concerts, extremely exclusive parties in period costume in historical stately homes, early dances classes and many more occasions for culture and fun. "
...she told me I don't do anything to be loved, that I'm always bored and so I went to Genoa to have fun...". Stendhal, Journal - October 16th 1814.
